I. The Sensor

Between August 29 and 30, 2026, the Aethel Noise project collected 1,030 measurement slices across nine geographic regions. Each slice recorded round-trip time (RTT) to 21 web resources, generating a continuous picture of how the global network was breathing — where it slowed, where it stuttered, where it held.

No BGP feeds. No commercial monitoring platform. Just a distributed sensor array, quiet by design, listening to the latency.

The dataset captured not only normal circadian rhythms — the way networks slow when populations wake and stream and trade — but also something far more dramatic: a sudden, synchronized rupture in the fabric of global connectivity.

II. What the Sensor Saw

At approximately 07:14 UTC on August 29, 2026, the sensor began registering anomalies. Within thirty minutes, six regions showed simultaneous RTT spikes — not the kind of noise that comes from local congestion, but a coherent, multi-regional disturbance.

Africa took the brunt of the impact. Normal RTT to African endpoints hovered around 107 milliseconds. In the space of minutes, that figure jumped to 359 ms, then 365 ms, then 357 ms. Later measurements reached 614 ms, 624 ms, and finally 663 ms — a sixfold increase over baseline.

Then something stranger appeared: negative anomalies. RTT to African endpoints dropped to 7.2 ms, 5.5 ms, 4.6 ms — values physically impossible for a transcontinental route under normal conditions. This suggested that part of the traffic had been switched to a local cache, a satellite link, or some other path that was dramatically shorter than the terrestrial route it replaced.

III. The Signature of a Break

AAE-1 cable break has a recognizable shape in latency data. It is not a single spike. It is a cascade:

  1. Initial shock. A sharp, synchronized jump across multiple regions as traffic hits the break and begins rerouting.
  2. Oscillation. A series of secondary spikes and dips while routers converge on new paths.
  3. Polarization. Some routes become dramatically slower (packets traveling the long way around the world), while others become paradoxically faster (local caches, satellite shortcuts).
  4. Stabilization. A gradual return to baseline as BGP settles and traffic finds its new normal.

All four phases were present in the Aethel Noise data. The sensor had captured not just the event, but its full waveform.

IV. Regional Correlation

Correlation analysis of RTT deviations revealed which regions share infrastructure. The strongest signal was between South America and Oceania, with a correlation coefficient of r = +0.67 — consistent with AAE-1 cable routes across the Pacific.

This is precisely the kind of information that an early warning system needs. When you know which regions move together, you can distinguish a local incident from a global one — and you can predict where the next ripple will appear.

V. Circadian Rhythm: The Internet's Pulse

Beneath the anomalies, the sensor also recorded the internet's daily rhythm. Some regions showed dramatic swings in latency as their populations woke and slept:

This is the background against which anomalies must be detected. A spike that would be unremarkable at 19:00 UTC might be glaring at 04:00 UTC. The sensor learns the pulse before it looks for the arrhythmia.

VI. Why This Matters

AAE-1 cable break is not just a technical nuisance. It disrupts commerce, isolates communities, and can be a harbinger of larger failures — whether from natural disaster, geopolitical conflict, or deliberate attack on infrastructure.

Commercial monitoring platforms like ThousandEyes or RIPE Atlas provide excellent visibility into these events. But they are centralized, proprietary, and often inaccessible to independent researchers.

The Aethel Noise project demonstrates that this capability can be built differently. A distributed array of lightweight sensors, measuring nothing more exotic than round-trip time to ordinary websites, can detect a major infrastructure failure within minutes — and characterize its shape, its spread, and its likely cause.

VII. What Comes Next

The dataset from August 29–30 is now a labeled ground truth: a real cable break, captured by a real sensor array, with timestamps and z-scores intact. It can be used to train detection algorithms, to validate new sensor designs, and to calibrate thresholds for future alerts.

We are continuing to operate the Aethel Noise sensor network and to refine its analytical layer. The next steps are:

  • Automated classification. Distinguishing cable breaks from DDoS attacks, BGP hijacks, and ordinary congestion.
  • Regional fingerprinting. Mapping the correlation structure of the global network in finer detail.
  • Public alerts. A notification layer that can tell researchers — and eventually the public — when something significant is happening.
